If you’re reading this, you might be one of the many people frustrated with Medisafe’s recent changes. You’re not alone — and you have options.
Why People Are Switching
In late 2024, Medisafe changed their free tier to limit users to just 2 medications. For anyone managing chronic conditions, this was a dealbreaker.
Common complaints we’ve heard: “If I only needed 2 medications, I wouldn’t need an app,” “I’ve used Medisafe for years for free — now they want £40/year,” “The interface has gotten so complicated,” and “I don’t want my health data in the cloud.”
How MedChime Compares

What You’ll Gain
- More free medications — 5 vs Medisafe’s 2
- One-time pricing — £6.99 once vs £40/year
- True privacy — No cloud storage, no account
- Simpler interface — Focused on reminders, not extras
- Offline medication database — Built-in suggestions for quick setup, no internet required
- As-needed medication tracking — Log painkillers, rescue inhalers, and other PRN medications alongside your scheduled meds
- Custom icons — Assign pill shapes and colours so you can identify medications at a glance
What You’ll Lose
- Drug interaction checking — MedChime doesn’t have a drug database for interactions. Consult your pharmacist instead (they’re better at this anyway).
- Medfriend notifications — We don’t have family notification features (yet).
- Cloud sync — Your data is on your device only. Use the backup feature to transfer between phones.
How to Switch
Step 1: Note your current medications
Before leaving Medisafe, write down or screenshot your medication names, doses, reminder times, and any notes or instructions.
Step 2: Download MedChime
Get MedChime from the Google Play Store. It’s free to download and use.
Step 3: Add your medications
Open MedChime, go to the Meds tab, and tap + to add each medication. Start typing the name and MedChime’s built-in database will suggest matches — no internet needed. Select the match or type the full name, set your dose and reminder time, and pick a custom icon. For medications you only take as needed, choose “As needed” instead of a schedule.
Step 4: Enable notifications
Make sure to allow notifications when prompted so you’ll receive reminders.
Step 5: Use both apps for a week (optional)
If you want to be safe, run both apps simultaneously for a week to make sure MedChime’s reminders are working for you.
Step 6: Uninstall Medisafe
Once you’re comfortable with MedChime, you can uninstall Medisafe.
Tips for a Smooth Transition
- Add medications one at a time — Don’t rush. Make sure each one is set up correctly.
- Double-check reminder times — Verify they match your intended schedule.
- Test notifications — Make sure your phone settings allow MedChime notifications.
- Consider upgrading — If you have more than 5 medications, MedChime Pro is a one-time £6.99.
